What is a Citation or Code Violation Notice? What Should I do Next?

“A code violation notice is issued from the Street’s department when a person has violated one or more codes in the City of Philadelphia or violated one or more Streets Department rules and regulations. A code violation notice (CVN) is a penalty punishable by a fine up to $300.00.”

You have 2 options when you receive a CVN:

  1. You can pay it *NOTE: If you pay the CVN, the funds from that payment go directly back to the state, including the district attorney’s office and the police department. Up Against the Law does not pay for CVNs.
  2. You can contest it. If you received a CVN while protesting against police violence, Up Against the Law can provide you legal support when contesting it. The steps to contesting a CVN are below.
